The Pilates Mat Teacher Training is carefully structured into modules that build upon and deepen one another. You are guided step by step — from the foundational principles to teaching independently with confidence.

Module 1: The Foundation
We begin at the base. You are introduced to the origins of Pilates, the movement principles, and the role of breath.
Here, you lay the foundation for how you understand and experience movement, within your own body and in your teaching.

Module 2 & 3: Basic Anatomy 1.0 & 2.0
In these modules, you build a strong foundation in anatomy. You will learn about the key bones, muscles, and joints, and develop an understanding of how the body moves. Through functional anatomy, you learn how to translate this knowledge directly into your teaching practice, including the development of effective cueing.

In addition, we dive deeper into the mechanics of breath, our primary source of life and an essential component within Pilates. From this perspective, you will learn how breath and movement are connected, and how to consciously integrate this into your classes.
This part of the training is enriched by Ashleigh, who brings her passion and expertise in breathing through her background as a physiotherapist and breathwork practitioner.

Module 4: Posture Alignment
You will deepen your understanding of posture and alignment. What is “good” posture, and how do you apply this to different bodies?
You will learn how to observe, analyse, and give precise feedback, allowing you to guide your participants in a safe and conscious way.

Module 5: Core Strength
This module focuses on the core. You will explore the relationship between the abdominal muscles, back extensors, and other muscle groups that contribute to stability and strength.
You will learn how to offer effective exercises that meet the needs of each individual body.

Module 6: The Art of Teaching
Here, you develop your skills as a teacher. You will learn how to structure a class, how to cue clearly and effectively, and how to create flow within your sessions. There is also space to explore your own teaching style and step into your role with confidence.

Module 7: Movement Adaptation & Spaceholding
In this module, you learn how to adapt exercises for different levels and target groups. You will develop the ability to make your classes more accessible or more challenging when needed.

You will also deepen your understanding of creating a safe and supportive environment (space holding).

Within this module, extra attention is given to:
  • Working with injuries
  • Teaching the older population
  • Pregnancy and postnatal guidance
  • Developing breath and body awareness in your classes

This part of the training is also supported by Ashleigh, who brings her expertise as a physiotherapist and breathwork practitioner.

Module 8: Recap & Theory Exam
We revisit and deepen the key theoretical concepts from the previous modules. This day is focused on integration and completion of the theoretical part of the training, including the theory exam. In consultation with the group, an additional online session can be organized prior to the exam to answer any remaining questions.

Module 9: Final Exams & Observation
The training concludes with the practical exam. You will demonstrate how you structure a class, guide exercises, and apply your knowledge in practice. In addition, you will continue developing your observation skills — an essential part of becoming a conscious and confident teacher.

After this training, you will not only have the knowledge and tools, but also the confidence to teach your own classes, in a way that truly aligns with you.

The team

Ashleigh (South-African) is a Physiotherapist, breathwork practitioner and movement teacher. She has 12 years of experience working in rehabilitation and exercise prescription, working with elderly and people living with different abilities.

Ashleigh has trained as a craniosacral therapist and a Birth Doula. She brings the wisdom from her experience working as a Physiotherapist and breathwork practitioner and as a movement teacher (teaching yoga, pilates and liberated movement) to the teacher training. She will be teaching modules on exercise adaptations for the older age bracket, common injuries and pregnancy/ postpartum as well as the art of space holding.

She will bring her knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of breath to the training and the importance of developing breath and body awareness as a teacher and space holder but also how to bring this across to your students.

 Questions

01

Requirements

  • Regular Pilates practice: Ideally 1–2 times per week for at least one year.
  • Genuine interest in anatomy, teaching, Pilates, and coaching.
  • Good physical condition, as well as mental and physical health, and preferably no current injuries. If in doubt, please contact us.
  • Strong command in English or Dutch to be able to integrate all content fully.

02

Do I need to buy the manual or other study materials?

You will receive the manual from us! :-)
We have all Pilates tools/mats available for you in the studio, but we do recommend having your own mat at home to practice on. In addition, there is one required reading book and several recommended books listed on the literature list.

03

Is there homework during the training?

Yes, you will.
Think of reading specific texts or chapters. You may also be asked to prepare a teaching segment or write a piece of self-reflection. In addition, you are required to complete observation hours, teaching hours, and your own practice hours. This is designed to support you in the process of becoming a unique Pilates teacher and to help you integrate the knowledge gained.

Expect around 2–3 hours of study time per week. Observation classes and personal practice sessions can be followed at The Human Fabrique or with designated teachers at other locations.

04

What does the exam look like?

Requirements before the exam:
Total of 85 student hours, including:
12 hours of participating in Pilates classes, with written evaluations of each class
7 hours of observation classes, with notes and evaluations
5 hours of teaching, supported by a lesson preparation form and evaluation
12–18 hours of homework assignments
45 hours of practical training

Exams/Final Assessment:
Written exam
Cueing/Coaching exam: explain and correct an exercise with a fellow trainee
Practical exam: teach your own written 45-minute class, assessed on class structure, teaching skills, and instruction.

05

Can I start teaching after completing this training?

When you have completed this training and received your certificate, we trust that you are a competent Pilates Mat Teacher. You will have learned all the foundational principles needed to teach a great class, so you are ready to start teaching.

However, if this is your very first teacher training, you will also discover that there is always more to learn than can fit into a single course. That is why you can view this training as a solid foundation to build upon, supporting your continued growth as a teacher and practitioner.

06

I don’t want to become a Pilates teacher, can I still join this training?

No. However, you can apply the knowledge you gain in other ways if you are already teaching as a coach or trainer. Since many of the homework assignments will focus on teaching and lesson preparation, having the motivation and willingness to apply this in practice is highly recommended in order to get the most out of this training.
